Best Buy Among First to Offer Microsoft Surface Tablet to Consumers

MINNEAPOLIS, Dec. 12, 2012 – Best Buy, the global leader in consumer electronics, announced it will launch the Microsoft Surface tablet on BestBuy.com today at Noon CST. The Surface will also be available in all Best Buy and select Best Buy Mobile specialty stores nationwide this Sunday, Dec. 16.

“Right now the only place you can get a Microsoft tablet is at a Microsoft store. That all changes today as BestBuy.com begins offering the Surface,” said Scott Durchslag, President of BestBuy.com. “Customers have come to expect Best Buy – both its store and website – to be the place with the broadest selection of consumer electronics and our sale of this much-hyped new tablet just reinforces that point.”

Best Buy sells 45 exclusive Windows 8 devices and has invested thousands of training hours for Blue Shirts and Geek Squad Agents to help consumers make the Windows 8 choices that best fit their individual needs. Every Best Buy store has a specially-skilled Windows 8 expert on hand. Best Buy features services aimed at improving customers’ tablet experiences, including Walk Out Working as well as a full array of accessories for customers to protect and personalize their new tablets.

“Consumers have heard about this tablet and now even more customers can experience it,” said Scott Anderson, merchant vice president for tablets at Best Buy. “Starting this weekend we will have almost 1,400 stores where people can buy it. The Surface is a fantastic add to our already enormous tablet assortment and makes Best Buy the destination for gift givers this year.”

According to the Consumers Electronics Association, when asked specifically which CE device consumers want the most this year, the most requested are tablets. In addition, the CEA report found that consumers wanted a tablet (8 percent) more than money (5 percent) and peace and happiness (5 percent).

The Surface retails for $499.99 (32GB – tablet only), $599.99 (32GB with black touch cover) or $699 (64GB with black touch cover).
